Knowledge and Expertise: As a mentor with the Girls L.E.A.P. Mentoring Program, you are required to participate in mentor training prior to the start of the mentoring sessions. You are expected to have sufficient knowledge in the area of trauma-informed mentoring.
Communication and Listening Skills: Effective communication is essential in mentoring relationships. You should be able to actively listen to your mentee, understand her needs and goals, and provide clear guidance and feedback.
Confidentiality: Respect the privacy and confidentiality of your mentee. Maintain confidentiality unless there is a legal or ethical obligation to disclose information in which case you are expected to share any findings with the Girls L.E.A.P. Program Director. Avoid contacting your mentee via text or email without parental permission.
Establish Clear Expectations: At the beginning of the mentoring relationship, establish clear expectations and goals with your mentee. Discuss the purpose of the mentoring, the duration of the relationship, and the specific objectives you both want to achieve.
Support and Encouragement: Be supportive and encouraging throughout the mentoring process. Help your mentee identify her strengths, overcome challenges, and set realistic goals. Provide constructive feedback to help her improve.
Respect and Diversity: Treat your mentee with respect and value her unique perspectives and experiences. Be sensitive to cultural, social, and individual differences, and foster an inclusive environment.
Time Commitment: Be aware of the time commitment required for mentoring. Set aside dedicated time for meetings, discussions, and activities with your mentee. Be reliable and punctual, respecting your mentee’s time as well. It is crucial for mentors to consistently
show up during mentoring sessions with children who have experienced trauma in order to establish trust, provide emotional support and model consistency and reliability. As a mentor with the Girls L.E.A.P. program, you are expected to attend both mentoring sessions at Northgate Intermediate School as much as possible. You also have an option to attend our Saturday Sister Circle sessions twice a month.
Boundaries: Maintain appropriate boundaries in the mentoring relationship. Avoid personal involvement in the private life of your mentee unless she chooses to share some personal issues. Be mindful of power dynamics. If any conflicts or concerns arise, address them openly and professionally with the Girls L.E.A.P. Program Director.
Professional Development: You are encouraged to attend workshops, conferences, seminars, or webinars focused on mentoring. These events provide opportunities to learn about the latest research, best practices, and innovative approaches in mentoring.
Evaluation and Reflection: Regularly evaluate the progress of the mentoring relationship and reflect on your own performance as a mentor. Seek feedback from your mentee and use it to improve your mentoring skills.
